Which months have the most Canadian grant deadlines?

November 2026 is the busiest month of the next twelve, with 32 of the 109 dated close dates, followed by March 2027 (20) and December 2026 (18). Deadlines are the exception, though: of the 691 programs open today, 596 have no closing date on file, and 486 of those take applications continuously.

Dated close dates by month, October 2026 to September 2027

Each program is counted once, on its next close date. Months far ahead look quieter partly because many funders have not published next year's dates yet, and every month has hundreds of rolling programs open.

A missing deadline is not the same as always open. 486 programs state a rolling or continuous intake. Another 110 are open today but the funder publishes no closing date, which can mean the intake ends when the budget runs out. And 229 are not taking applications now: 218 between intakes, 7 not open yet and 4 paused or waiting on a confirmed next intake. Most announce their next window only weeks ahead.

How Canadian deadline cycles actually work

Canadian funding runs on the April-to-March federal fiscal year: budgets refresh in April, and a wave of fixed deadlines lands before March 31.

The federal fiscal year runs April 1 to March 31, and it shapes almost every funding date in Canada. New budget allocations arrive in April, which is when rolling programs have the most room and program officers move fastest. Through summer and fall, budgets draw down. By the final quarter, January through March, two things happen at once: fixed-deadline programs rush to close before year-end, and rolling programs start running out of allocation. The planner above shows the year-end wave: March 2027 holds 20 dated closes, against 19 in January and February together.

That rhythm produces the single most useful timing rule in Canadian funding: apply to rolling-intake programs early in the fiscal year. An April application to a program like IRAP meets a full regional budget; the same application in January competes for whatever remains. IRAP regional pools can be largely committed by autumn.

Fixed deadline, rolling intake, and the third kind

A fixed deadline means the program closes on a date and late applications are not accepted, regardless of quality. Rolling intake means the program accepts applications continuously and decisions come in the order received; the constraint is budget, not calendar. There is also a third pattern most calendars ignore: windowed intake, where a program opens for a period of weeks, closes, and reopens next cycle. The planner's Between-intakes view exists for exactly these: 218 programs in the catalogue are between intakes right now.

The always-open list mixes two different kinds of funding, and the difference matters. Most rolling programs, IRAP included, are competitive: continuous intake, discretionary approval. A smaller set is entitlement-style. The Stack Floor is the funding a qualified applicant can count on before any competitive program: entitlement-style tax credits and guaranteed-access financing that pay every eligible claim. SR&ED and the Apprenticeship Job Creation Tax Credit sit in your Stack Floor: no deadline to chase, no competition to win. They file with your corporate tax return.

Verdict

If you can only pick one month to submit a rolling-intake application, pick April: fresh budgets, fully staffed program offices, and eleven months of runway before fiscal year-end. And before chasing any dated deadline, claim your Stack Floor first; it pays regardless of the calendar.

Recap: April is the strongest month to apply, March 31 ends the fiscal year and its wave of deadlines, and entitlement-style programs (your Stack Floor) ignore the calendar entirely.

Canada Council, CMHC housing, IRAP: the named-funder deadlines people search for

Canada Council, CMHC housing, and IRAP all run rolling or component-based intake: none of them has one single annual deadline.

Canada Council for the Arts

The Canada Council for the Arts does not use one calendar-wide deadline. Each granting program runs on its own component schedule, and many of the largest streams are continuous-intake. The flagship Explore and Create program accepts applications year-round across several components, with results roughly 4 to 6 months after you apply. Component dates shift each cycle, so confirm the specific component's next date on the Council's own program page before planning around it.

CMHC and federal housing funding

Most federal housing funding is continuous-intake with no fixed application deadline, which surprises searchers expecting a dated window. The CMHC Apartment Construction Loan Program accepts applications on a rolling basis until its allocation is committed, and Build Canada Homes prefab and modular financing is likewise rolling. The CMHC Affordable Housing Fund runs in periodic intake rounds instead. For rolling housing streams the practical rule inverts the usual one: budgets commit first-come, so earlier is materially better. There is no deadline to wait for, only an allocation to beat.

IRAP

There is no IRAP application deadline. The NRC Industrial Research Assistance Program takes applications year-round; what matters is budget availability, because each NRC region allocates its annual funding across the fiscal year and regional pools can be largely committed by autumn. IRAP starts with an Industrial Technology Advisor relationship, not a form, which makes April through June the best window to book that first ITA conversation.

Verdict

For Canada Council, CMHC housing, and IRAP there is no single deadline to wait for. Their budgets commit first-come through the fiscal year, so the date that decides your outcome is how early you apply, not when a window closes.

Source: Canada Council, CMHC, and NRC IRAP program pages as reflected in the GrantCompass catalogue.

Recap: for arts, housing, and innovation funding alike, the honest answer to "what is the deadline?" is usually "there isn't one; apply early." The planner's dated view covers the programs that genuinely do close.

Provincial timing quirks

Provinces run their own budget cycles on top of the federal April-to-March year, and each region has a distinct deadline personality.

Western Canada. Alberta tends to open its marquee business programs in spring with fall closes, while British Columbia aligns most programs with the federal fiscal year; BC's CleanBC streams often run separate windows opening in January. Saskatchewan business programs mostly follow federal cycles.

Central Canada. Ontario runs the largest program count in the country, with several funders operating quarterly or multi-window intake (Ontario Trillium Foundation and Ontario Creates among them). Quebec operates many programs in French only, on cycles that do not align with federal timing; businesses in Quebec should track provincial dates separately.

Atlantic Canada. The four Atlantic provinces share ACOA programs, which generally run continuous intake. PEI keeps the most rigid deadline structure in the region, with key programs closing March 31, the provincial fiscal year-end.

The territories. Yukon, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut run territory-specific programs with their own tiered or seasonal dates; Yukon's Economic Development Fund uses tiered intake dates through the year. See the Northern Territories guide for the full picture.

When to start: working backwards from a deadline

A competitive application takes 8 to 12 weeks from first draft to submission; the biggest cause of rejection you control is starting too late.

Rushed applications lose. Working backwards from any dated close in the planner, here is the preparation sequence that successful applicants actually follow:

  1. 12 months out: build the calendar.
    • Map every program you are structurally eligible for (the GrantCompass match quiz is the fast way)
    • Set target submission dates for rolling programs, aiming at April to June
    • Plan which programs stack together before applying to any one of them
    • Start SR&ED contemporaneous documentation if you do R&D
  2. 6 months out: assemble the documents.
    • Update the business plan and financial projections
    • Gather incorporation documents, CRA business number, and prior-year financials
    • Contact regional advisors: IRAP ITAs, ACOA officers, FedDev liaisons
  3. 8 to 12 weeks out: write.
    • Download the latest forms and guidelines; they change annually
    • Tailor the draft to the program's published evaluation criteria
    • Collect vendor quotes and letters of support
    • Have someone outside the company review for clarity
  4. 2 to 4 weeks out: final review and submit early.
    • Verify the deadline has not moved on the official program page
    • Complete portal registrations; some take days to activate
    • Submit at least 48 hours before the close and save the confirmation receipt
Preparation time by program type: IRAP takes 4 to 8 weeks from first ITA contact to formal submission. SR&ED should be documented through the year and files with your T2 return. CanExport needs 3 to 5 weeks for a strong application. Most provincial programs need 2 to 6 weeks. Step-by-step detail: How to Apply for Grants.
Source: NRC IRAP and CanExport program guides; preparation-time ranges as maintained in the GrantCompass catalogue.

Recap: plan 12 months out, document 6 months out, start writing 8 to 12 weeks out, and submit 48 hours early. Deadlines reward the prepared, not the fast.

How to read this calendar for your situation

The same deadline list means different things at different preparation stages: triage inside 30 days, strategy at 6 months, systems at 12.

If a deadline is inside 30 days

Triage mode

First, confirm the date on the program's official .gc.ca or provincial page; dates shift after budget announcements and a date verified three months ago is not verified. Second, inside 14 days, do not start a new application; finish the one already in progress. Third, run the document checklist today: CRA business number, incorporation certificate, two years of financials or 12-month projections, project plan, itemized budget with quotes. A missing document is the most preventable last-minute rejection.

If you are planning the next 6 months

Strategy mode

Six months is enough runway for IRAP, CanExport, and most provincial programs without rushing. Book the IRAP ITA meeting now; the program starts with that relationship, not a form. Then design your stack before applying to anything: successful applicants commonly combine several programs, and total government assistance generally cannot exceed 75% of eligible costs, so the combination needs planning up front.

If you are building a 12-month funding calendar

Systems mode

Treat funding as a recurring budget line, not a windfall. A typical Canadian SME is structurally eligible for 5 to 15 programs at once. Catalogue yours, overlay their windows on this planner, and set reminders at 90, 60, and 30 days before each close. Re-verify dates quarterly; that discipline alone separates businesses that win funding consistently from those that miss windows every year.

Dates the dataset can't show you

Some of the most important funding dates are rules rather than calendar entries: filing windows, annual openings, and fiscal year-end clusters.

The planner tracks published program close dates. Four date rules matter just as much and never appear in any deadline list:

Date ruleWhat it meansWhere to check
SR&ED 18-month filing windowSR&ED has no application deadline; the claim files with your T2 return, and you have 18 months from fiscal year-end, with no extensions. Work from January 2025 year-ends becomes unclaimable mid-2026.T661 filing guide
Canada Summer Jobs opens each DecemberCanada Summer Jobs applications open in December for the following summer's hires; miss the winter window and the season is gone.Program page
March 31 fiscal year-end clusterFederal and most provincial fiscal years end March 31, and budgets that must be spent by then shape when programs close. The planner shows 20 dated closes in March 2027.Planner, March bar
Windowed programs reopen unannouncedThe 218 programs between intakes typically publish their next window only weeks ahead. Watching them beats waiting for them.Planner, Between intakes view

Do deadline dates shift after federal budgets?

Yes, and it is the main reason a deadline list can rot. Federal budgets, typically tabled in February or March, create programs, top up allocations, and occasionally close streams early. Program pages update afterwards, sometimes with little announcement. That is why every entry in the planner links to its program page, and why the safe habit is confirming any date on the official source within 4 to 6 weeks of applying. GrantCompass re-verifies catalog dates continuously, and this page regenerates from the catalog rather than being written once and left to age.

Frequently asked questions

When do most Canadian grant programs open for applications?
Most never close: 596 of the 691 programs open today have no closing date on file, and 486 of those run continuous intake. Programs with windows tend to open early in the federal fiscal year, April through June, when new budget allocations arrive. Dated closes peak in November 2026 (32), and 20 land in March 2027, the fiscal year-end.
What is the difference between a fixed deadline and rolling intake?
A fixed deadline closes on a date; late applications are not accepted regardless of quality. Rolling intake accepts applications continuously, and the real constraint is budget: once a year's allocation is committed, applications wait or are declined. For rolling programs, earlier in the fiscal year is better.
How far in advance should I start preparing an application?
Start a competitive application 8 to 12 weeks before the close, and gather your documents before that. IRAP takes 4 to 8 weeks from first advisor contact; CanExport needs 3 to 5 weeks; simple provincial programs can be done in 2 to 6 weeks. Submit at least 48 hours before any close.
Can I apply to multiple grant programs at the same time?
Yes, and successful applicants usually do. The constraint is stacking limits: total government assistance generally cannot exceed 75% of eligible project costs, and each program's rules define what counts. Disclose all concurrent applications; design the stack before applying to any single program.
What happens if I miss a grant deadline in Canada?
For fixed-deadline programs, you wait for the next cycle; extensions are essentially never granted. The productive response is to switch targets: 486 programs open today run rolling intake with no deadline, and your tax-credit entitlements (like SR&ED, within its 18-month filing window) remain claimable regardless of any program calendar.
Are grant deadlines the same every year?
Roughly but not reliably. Annual programs tend to reopen in the same season each year, but exact dates move with budgets and program reviews. Treat last year's date as a season hint, never as this year's plan, and confirm on the official program page within 4 to 6 weeks of applying.
Which programs are always open for applications?
The planner's Open, no deadline view lists every one from the catalogue, largest first: rolling federal programs like IRAP and CSBFP-backed bank financing, most regional development agency streams, and entitlement tax credits like SR&ED that file with your tax return rather than through an application window.
Does it cost anything to apply for government grants?
Government programs do not charge application fees. Your real costs are preparation time and, if you choose to use one, a consultant or grant writer. Be wary of anyone charging fees to "unlock" a government grant application; the forms and guidelines are free on official program pages.
