Go after the money that lands before you need it. As of October 29, 2026, a loan pays before you spend, a grant pays back part of what you already spent, and a tax credit comes back after you file. Pick your situation to see what arrives in time.
What is the money for?
When do you need it?
Can you pay part of the cost yourself first?
Worked example: equipment, needed in 3 to 6 months, part paid by you.
314 of the 581 grants we track that are not closed list equipment as an eligible cost. National programs only; the estimator above covers your province.

A typical Canadian small business can access $50,000 to $500,000+ in combined funding from grants, tax credits, and government programs — though many are eligible for significantly more. Canada maintains over 850+ active funding programs at the federal and provincial levels, with a combined annual disbursement exceeding $12 billion. The exact amount depends on your province (Ontario and Quebec have the most programs), your industry (technology and clean tech are the most funded sectors), your business stage, and your team size. This estimator scans the full database to give you a personalized funding landscape in seconds.
The GrantCompass Business Funding Estimator uses real-time data from our database of 850+ programs. Here is the step-by-step methodology behind your personalized estimate.
Half the grants we track cap at $75,000 or less per program. As of October 29, 2026, 483 grant programs we track that are not closed state a maximum, and the median is $75,000 (GrantCompass catalogue, October 2026). 166 cap at $25,000 or less, so one program rarely comes near the estimator's total.
Per-program maximums of 483 grants that are not closed and state one. Source: GrantCompass catalogue, read October 29, 2026.A funding estimate is the sum of the maximums of every program you could apply to, not a forecast of money you will receive. The estimator adds those maximums, and no business receives all of them at once. The $50,000 to $500,000 range at the top of this page is combined funding across several programs; the bars above show what one program pays at most. Worked examples by business type: how much grant money a Canadian business can get.
Understanding the differences between funding types is critical for choosing the right programs. Grants are the most desirable, but tax credits often provide the largest dollar amounts.
| Type | Repayment | Typical Amount | Timeline | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grant | None — free money | $10K – $5M | 2–6 months | Medium to High |
| Tax Credit | None — reduces taxes or refund | $5K – $2M+ | Filed with tax return | Low to Medium |
| Forgivable Loan | Forgiven if conditions met | $25K – $10M | 3–8 months | Medium |
| Loan | Must be repaid (subsidized rate) | $50K – $50M | 1–3 months | Low to Medium |
| Program / Award | None (non-cash support or prize) | $5K – $100K | Varies | Varies |
A small business IT budget in Canada has five lines, and outside money covers only some of them: hardware is loan money, software and a website can draw small provincial grants, custom software draws R&D money only for real R&D, and cybersecurity you budget yourself. As of October 29, 2026, the Canada Digital Adoption Program (CDAP) no longer takes applications: it ended on March 31, 2025, and 138 of the 581 grants we track that are not closed list technology or software as an eligible cost.
| What you are buying | What can carry it | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Software and subscriptions | A provincial digital adoption grant, where your province has one open | Look in your province first |
| Hardware: computers, tills, devices | A CSBFP loan through your bank, which covers equipment | Loan money |
| A website or online store | Small provincial grants, such as Prince Edward Island's Web Presence Assistance | Small grants, a few provinces |
| Cybersecurity | We list no national grant for it on its own | Budget it yourself |
| Custom software you build in-house | SR&ED and NRC IRAP, if the work solves a real technical problem | R&D money, only for real R&D |
Three provincial programs show the size of what replaced CDAP: the Northwest Territories ADAPT Fund pays $5,000 to $15,100 (open), PEI Web Presence Assistance $1,000 to $2,500 (open) and Tech Yukon TYDA up to $2,500 (between intakes). Each is a top-up to a budget you fund yourself.

These misconceptions stop thousands of eligible businesses from applying. The reality is more accessible than most entrepreneurs think.
"Only tech companies get grants. My industry is not eligible for any funding."
While technology has the most programs (70+), every industry has funding options. Agriculture, manufacturing, healthcare, clean tech, export businesses, and even general small businesses all have dedicated programs. The CSBFP alone provides up to $1.15M in government-backed loans to any sector.
"Startups cannot get grants. You need to be an established business with revenue."
Many programs specifically target startups and pre-revenue businesses. Programs like Futurpreneur (up to $75K), IRAP (median disclosed award about $75K), and dozens of provincial startup grants exist precisely for early-stage businesses. Some programs even prefer first-time applicants.
"The application process is too complicated and not worth the effort for small amounts."
Application difficulty varies enormously. Many programs — especially tax credits like SR&ED — are relatively straightforward with the right guidance. Programs rated 1-2 difficulty (out of 5) have short, simple applications. Even a $20,000 grant represents meaningful capital for a startup.
"You can only apply for one program at a time. Getting one grant means you cannot get others."
Program stacking is not only allowed but encouraged. A business can simultaneously receive grants, claim tax credits, and hold government-backed loans. For example, an Ontario CCPC can stack SR&ED (35% federal + 11.5% provincial), IRAP, and a CSBFP loan on the same R&D project. Some programs do reduce eligible amounts dollar-for-dollar, but the combined recovery can exceed 60%.
No funder publishes an approval chance by revenue, so a quick-service restaurant doing $450,000 a year cannot read its odds off an estimate. As of October 29, 2026, grants for these businesses pay for a project, such as a summer student or an energy upgrade. Fit-outs, equipment and day-to-day cash are mostly loan money.
Revenue matters more to a lender, who sizes a loan against it, than to most grants. Canada Summer Jobs pays part of a summer student's wage (private employers: 50 or fewer full-time staff, two years in operation by December 31, 2026, unless reimbursed for a CSJ 2026 job); applications close December 3, 2026. The Pizza Hut Canada Equal Slice Grant is a pitch competition: owners from an equity-deserving community compete for a share of $100,000 in cash grants, with a virtual pitch on November 24, 2026, and applications close when spots fill. More: restaurant grants in Canada.
A shop's best grant fits are selling online and selling further away. PEI's Web Presence Assistance pays $1,000 to $2,500, and CanExport SMEs pays up to $50,000 a project for marketing outside Canada; it is between intakes as of October 29, 2026. A summer student through Canada Summer Jobs fits a shop too. Stock and a lease build-out are loan questions: the CSBFP covers renovations, equipment and working capital, including a line of credit. More: retail grants in Canada.
Trades businesses get most of their outside help through people. The federal Apprenticeship Job Creation Tax Credit is worth up to $2,000 a year, claimed on your return. Training grants run by each province, the Canada Job Grant family, help pay for courses, and Canada Summer Jobs can pay part of a helper's wage. Trucks, tools and equipment sit with lenders. More: trades and apprenticeship incentives.
Next step: open the Canada Summer Jobs page before December 3, 2026, then compare working capital loans.

Build confidence and cash flow before tackling competitive grants. Check difficulty ratings to prioritize.
Financial statements, business plans, and project descriptions are required by almost every program. Having these ready means you can apply to multiple programs quickly when windows open.
Most businesses are eligible for 10–30 programs but apply for fewer than 3. Cast a wide net: grants, tax credits, and loans can all stack on the same project. The more applications in flight, the higher your aggregate success rate.
Programs fund priorities, not businesses. Frame your application around what the program wants to achieve (job creation, innovation, export growth, sustainability). Read the program guidelines and mirror their language.
