Program Description

Cost-sharing program that helps Alberta employers cover training costs for current and new employees to enhance productivity. Replaced the Canada-Alberta Job Grant in 2025.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be an Alberta employer (any size, any sector)
  • Must operate in Alberta; trainees are current employees, people who have an offer of employment from you, or the business owners themselves
  • Training must be delivered by a third-party trainer (not self-directed learning by the employer)
  • Training must (1) fall within the funder's productivity-skills categories (Business Process and Operations Management, Technical, or Digital and Technological), (2) be relevant to the business's operational needs and the trainee's job, (3) finish within 52 weeks of the Application received date, (4) take place in Alberta (online training counts), (5) include interaction with a qualified instructor, and (6) be instructional (homework, exams, pre-course work and research alone do not count).
  • Funding covers 75% of eligible training costs, up to $5,000 per trainee per fiscal year (April 1 to March 31), the same for every trainee; maximum $100,000 per employer per fiscal year
  • Application must be submitted before training begins — retroactive funding is not permitted
  • Employer must be registered, have a mailing address, and have been operating in Alberta for at least one year before applying
  • Trainees must live in Alberta and be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or persons protected under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada)
  • Ineligible trainees: board members; unemployed trainees who will not be employed by the employer once the training is completed; individuals without a paid employer-employee relationship (e.g. sub-contractors, volunteers), unless they are business owners; unemployed family members; temporary foreign workers or others with temporary status in Canada
  • Business owners can be trainees (since October 8, 2025): an owner must have an active role in the operations of the business and be able to prove it on request
  • Employed family members can be trainees (since October 8, 2025): the family member must be a paid employee, the employer must give a clear reason for choosing them, and an application may be declined where there is a real or perceived conflict of interest
  • Employers must intend to hire or continue to employ their trainees after the training is complete
  • Training providers must have training as a main business activity, and must have been in business providing training for at least two years at the time of application
  • Instructors must meet the funder's Qualified Instructor definition; if the training provider is a private career college, it must be listed on the Private Career Colleges Registry

How to Win

Insider tips, common pitfalls, and what successful applicants look like

Premium
Insider Tip

The funder recommends applying at least 30 days before training starts, but that window is not itself the hard rule — training cannot start until the CAPG Portal shows ‘Application Received,’ which only happens once every trainee has clicked ‘I confirm’ in the consent email.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions founders most often ask about Canada-Alberta Productivity Grant

Free
Can sole proprietors apply?
Yes. Unincorporated businesses are eligible employers, and since October 8, 2025 the owner can be the trainee, as long as the owner has an active role in running the business and can prove it if asked. The business must be registered and have operated in Alberta for at least one year.
What's the typical award amount?
75% of eligible training costs, up to $5,000 per trainee per fiscal year. The funder's own examples: a $3,000 course returns $2,250, and a $12,000 course returns the $5,000 cap. Maximum $100,000 per employer per fiscal year.
How long before training starts must I apply?
The funder recommends applying at least 30 days ahead, but that's a recommendation, not the hard rule. The binding requirement is that training cannot start until the CAPG Portal shows ‘Application Received’ status, which happens once every trainee clicks ‘I confirm’ in the consent email — no exceptions.
Why do applications get rejected?
Most common: training started before 'Application Received' status appeared, or training was self-directed (e.g., books, DVDs, fully self-paced e-learning).
Can I stack this with other grants?
Yes — compatible with SR&ED, IRAP, AMPG, and CanExport. Avoid overlap with ESDC Sectoral Workforce Solutions; check for cost-sharing conflicts.
