Student and Young Founder Funding in Canada 2026

Three separate systems get called "student grants," and mixing them up wastes hours. If you are starting your own business, Futurpreneur lends up to $75,000, but it is a loan, and the closest thing to free money is Ontario's Summer Company ($3,000) or Saskatchewan's Young Entrepreneur Bursary ($5,000). If you are a graduate student or postdoc, Mitacs pays $15,000 to $20,000 per research unit through a company partner. If you want a paid placement, the money goes to the employer who hires you, not to you directly. Pick your lane below.

Is there a Canada Student Grant for 2026?

Yes. As of October 23, 2026, the Canada Student Grant is federal student aid you do not pay back: a full-time student can receive up to $4,200 per year ($525 per month of study) until the end of the 2026 to 2027 school year. Since August 1, 2026, most full-time students at private, for-profit schools in Canada no longer qualify. It serves students with low or middle incomes, dependants or disabilities, and you apply through your provincial or territorial student aid office. GrantCompass covers business funding, so we do not list it.

The funding landscape for students and young founders

Canada funds students and young people through three separate systems, and only one of them pays you directly without strings attached.
The short answer

A founder aged 18 to 39 can borrow up to $75,000 through Futurpreneur, but it is a loan. Non-repayable money for a student founder is smaller and mostly provincial: $3,000 through Ontario's Summer Company or $5,000 through Saskatchewan's Young Entrepreneur Bursary. A graduate student or postdoc partnering with an incorporated company can access $15,000 to $20,000 per unit through Mitacs Accelerate. And a wage subsidy for a placement, through SWPP or Canada Summer Jobs, is paid to whoever hires you, not to you.

What the catalog data shows

Six active or recently active programs in the GrantCompass catalog are structurally gated to young entrepreneurs specifically. Four of those pay a student directly with no repayment (Summer Company, the Saskatchewan Young Entrepreneur Bursary, RBC's Rock My Business Awards, and the Ottawa chapter of Summer Company), and their median maximum is $4,000, ranging from $3,000 to $10,000 (RBC's window just closed for this cycle; the next is expected mid-2027). The other two are loans capped between $150,000 and $2,000,000, both restricted to agriculture. None of the six touch Futurpreneur's $75,000 loan ceiling, which sits in a separate, much larger loan-only category built specifically for founders aged 18 to 39.

Grant or loan? The honest breakdown

Futurpreneur is the program most students find first, and it is also the one most likely to be miscategorized as free money.

Search "student grants" and Futurpreneur shows up on nearly every list, but the core Startup Program is a loan: up to $75,000, made up of up to $25,000 from Futurpreneur plus up to $50,000 from BDC, repaid with interest over time. What makes it different from a bank loan is what comes with it, a two-year mentorship match and no collateral requirement on the Futurpreneur portion. Every stream, including Side Hustle (up to $25,000), Black Entrepreneur (up to $75,000), and Indigenous Entrepreneur (up to $75,000), serves founders aged 18 to 39, and the business must be under 24 months old at the time of application.

Young founder

If you want money you never have to repay

Your realistic non-repayable options are narrower and provincial. Ontario's Summer Company pays $3,000 to students aged 15 to 29 launching a summer venture, with applications typically opening in January through your local Small Business Enterprise Centre. Saskatchewan's Young Entrepreneur Bursary pays $5,000 to business owners aged 18 to 35 with a business under 10 years old, through about 57 bursaries awarded per year. Neither gets you close to $75,000, but neither one is debt.

Start: check whether your province runs one of these before you take on a loan.
Incorporated founder

If your business is already incorporated

Mitacs Accelerate Entrepreneur is a genuine grant, $15,000 per 4-month internship unit, with multiple units available for a longer project. The gate that trips people up is the requirement itself: your business must already be incorporated to be the industry partner. If you are still operating as a sole proprietor, incorporate first, or start with Summer Company or the Saskatchewan bursary, neither of which carries that requirement.

Start: confirm your incorporation status before you build a Mitacs application around it.
"For over two decades, Futurpreneur Canada's work has helped empower tens of thousands of young entrepreneurs and we remain committed to supporting the next generation of Canadian entrepreneurs." The Honourable Rechie Valdez, Minister of Small Business, Government of Canada, April 2024

Why does a "youth grant" list keep including a loan?

Because Futurpreneur is genuinely the largest dollar figure aimed at young founders in Canada, and most lists are built by amount, not by structure. At $75,000, it dwarfs every non-repayable option on this page by a factor of 7 to 25. That makes it worth including, but it also means a founder who wants truly free money needs to look past the biggest number to the smaller, non-repayable ones, or accept that a loan with mentorship attached is still the most realistic path to that scale of capital.

The verdict

If you need real scale and can carry debt, Futurpreneur is the honest starting point precisely because it is a loan, not despite it. If you want money you never repay, expect a few thousand dollars from a provincial program, not tens of thousands, and expect it to only exist in some provinces.

In short: Futurpreneur ($75,000, loan, ages 18-39), Mitacs Entrepreneur ($15,000 per unit, grant, requires incorporation), Summer Company and the Saskatchewan bursary ($3,000-$5,000, grant, one province each).

Placements and paid internships: what the money actually means for you

A paid placement is funded by a wage subsidy that belongs to your employer, so your job is to make yourself worth claiming it for.

SWPP and Canada Summer Jobs are the two programs behind most "paid internship" postings you will see, and neither one puts money in your account directly. SWPP pays the employer who hires you 50% of your gross pay, up to $5,000 per placement. The higher tier for students from under-represented groups and first-year students (70% of wages, up to $7,000) was withdrawn on April 1, 2026. Canada Summer Jobs pays up to 100% of minimum wage to a non-profit employer, or up to 50% to a small for-profit business, for hiring youth aged 15 to 30. Canada Summer Jobs is open until December 3, 2026: the 2027 employer call opened October 27, 2026 at 9:00 a.m. ET, and the 2026 cycle closed December 11, 2025.

If a wage subsidy is not yours, why does it matter to you?

Because it changes how you sell yourself. An employer weighing whether to hire a student is really weighing a discounted hire against a full-price one, so knowing that you come with a subsidy of up to $5,000 attached is a real selling point in an application or interview. Sector delivery partners like BioTalent, EHRC, ICTC WIL Digital, and MiHR run the same SWPP amounts for biotech, electricity, tech, and mining employers, so mentioning the right delivery partner for your field can also speed up an employer's decision. The full mechanics of how an employer claims these subsidies, including which delivery partner to use and how stacking works, are covered in our youth and student hiring guide.

The honest version: if you are hoping a wage subsidy lands in your own bank account, it will not. Your leverage is convincing an employer to hire you because of it, not applying for it yourself. For money that actually comes to you, look at the founder or researcher lanes above instead.

Internship grants: which program pays for the student you want to hire

An internship grant in Canada is a wage subsidy paid to the employer, not to the student. As of October 23, 2026, the main one is the federal Student Work Placement Program (SWPP), which pays 50% of wages, up to $5,000 per placement, for an enrolled college or university student. You claim it through the delivery partner for your sector.

Hiring a student this summer: Canada Summer Jobs or SWPP?

Every summer student grant for a business is paid to the employer. Four provinces run their own, the part most employers miss; the federal pair, Canada Summer Jobs (open until December 3, 2026) and SWPP, follows.

Common mistakes

Most mistakes on this page come from treating one funding system's rules as if they applied to another.
Mistake

Expecting Futurpreneur's $75,000 to be a grant.

Reality

It is a loan, made up of up to $25,000 from Futurpreneur plus up to $50,000 from BDC, and it must be repaid with interest. The mentorship is free; the money is not.

Mistake

Applying to Futurpreneur at 40 and hoping for an exception.

Reality

Every Futurpreneur stream caps eligibility at age 39 at the time of application, with no waiver. Apply before you turn 40 if you plan to use it.

Mistake

Applying to Mitacs Entrepreneur before incorporating.

Reality

Both Mitacs Accelerate and Mitacs Accelerate Entrepreneur require an incorporated company as the industry partner. Incorporate first, or use a program without that gate.

Mistake

Assuming every regional young-business grant is pure non-repayable money.

Reality

Montreal's PME MTL Fonds Jeunes Entreprises pairs up to $25,000 non-repayable with a mandatory PME MTL loan taken at the same time. It is partly free money, partly debt.

Mistake

Thinking SWPP money will show up in your own account.

Reality

SWPP and Canada Summer Jobs are wage subsidies paid to the employer who hires you. Money that comes to you directly is a loan or a young-founder grant, not a placement subsidy.

Mistake

Assuming Summer Company or the Young Entrepreneur Bursary exist in your province.

Reality

Summer Company is Ontario-only and the Young Entrepreneur Bursary is Saskatchewan-only. Confirm your province runs a direct-to-student program before you plan around one.

Student business grants in your province: the short answer and the page with the rest

In most provinces a student founder's first money is a loan. As of October 23, 2026, the GrantCompass catalogue lists a student or young-founder grant in two provinces and one city: Ontario's Summer Company (up to $3,000), Saskatchewan's Young Entrepreneur Bursary ($5,000) and Créavenir in Laval, Quebec (up to $5,000). Both provincial awards are between intakes. Everywhere, the national option is Futurpreneur, a loan of up to $75,000 with BDC for founders aged 18 to 39.

Frequently asked questions

Is Futurpreneur a grant for students?
No, Futurpreneur is a loan, not a grant. The core Startup Program lends up to $75,000, made up of up to $25,000 from Futurpreneur plus up to $50,000 from BDC, and it must be repaid with interest. It comes with a mandatory 2-year mentorship. Every stream serves founders aged 18 to 39 at the time of application, and the business must be under 24 months old.
What non-repayable funding can a student actually use to start a business?
The direct, non-repayable options are narrow and mostly provincial. Ontario's Summer Company pays $3,000 to students aged 15 to 29 launching a summer business. Saskatchewan's Young Entrepreneur Bursary pays $5,000 to business owners aged 18 to 35. Mitacs Accelerate Entrepreneur pays $15,000 per 4-month unit, but it requires your business to already be incorporated. Outside those, most of the money aimed at young people is structured as a loan.
Do I need to incorporate before applying to Mitacs Entrepreneur?
Yes. Both Mitacs Accelerate Entrepreneur and standard Mitacs Accelerate require an incorporated company as the industry partner. If your venture is still a sole-proprietor idea on paper, incorporate first, or start with a program that does not carry that gate, such as Summer Company or the Saskatchewan bursary.
Does the Student Work Placement Program pay me directly?
No. SWPP pays the employer who hires you 50% of your gross pay, up to $5,000 per placement. You do not apply for the money yourself. Your role is to be the placement an employer wants to claim it for, which means pitching your fit directly to the employer or their delivery partner.
Is Canada Summer Jobs open right now?
Yes. The 2027 Canada Summer Jobs employer call opened October 27, 2026 and closes December 3, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific. The 2026 cycle closed December 11, 2025. Like SWPP, the funding goes to the employer, not to you.
What is the age cutoff for Futurpreneur?
39 at the time of application, across every Futurpreneur stream, including the core Startup Program, Side Hustle, Newcomer, Black Entrepreneur, and Indigenous Entrepreneur programs. There is no waiver. Turning 40 before you apply disqualifies you.
Can I use Mitacs Accelerate if I am not a graduate student?
No. Mitacs Accelerate requires current graduate or postdoctoral enrollment. If you are an undergraduate looking for a paid placement, the Student Work Placement Program is the more realistic route. If you are trying to fund your own company rather than a research project, look at the Futurpreneur or Mitacs Entrepreneur lane instead.
Are there startup grants for students outside Ontario and Saskatchewan?
The confirmed province-specific pool is thin: Summer Company in Ontario, the Young Entrepreneur Bursary in Saskatchewan and Créavenir in Laval, Quebec (a grant of up to $5,000 for founders aged 18 to 39) are the three verified programs that pay a young founder directly. Elsewhere, most students rely on Futurpreneur, which is national but is a loan, or on general startup and pre-revenue grants that are not age-restricted.
Is there a Canada Student Grant for 2026?
Yes. The Canada Student Grant is federal student aid that does not need to be paid back, for post-secondary tuition, living expenses and school costs: up to $4,200 per year for a full-time student until the end of the 2026 to 2027 school year. Since August 1, 2026, most full-time students at private, for-profit schools in Canada no longer qualify. You apply through your provincial or territorial student aid office. GrantCompass covers business funding, so we do not list it; canada.ca has the details.
Are internship grants paid to the student or the company?
To the company. SWPP and its sector partners, such as ICTC, ECO Canada and BioTalent, pay the employer up to $5,000 per placement, and Mitacs funds a research internship through the company partner. The student earns a wage from the employer. A student's best move is telling an employer which program covers their field.
Can a small business get a grant to hire a summer student?
Yes. Canada Summer Jobs pays a private business with 50 or fewer full-time employees up to 50% of minimum wage for a worker aged 15 to 30; the 2027 call is open until December 3, 2026. If the student is enrolled in college or university, SWPP pays up to $5,000 per placement in any term.
Is there a student entrepreneur loan in Canada?
Yes. Futurpreneur lends to founders aged 18 to 39, up to $75,000 together with BDC. In New Brunswick, SEED gives students an interest-free loan of up to $3,000 for a summer business, and up to a third is reimbursed if it is repaid in full by October 15.
Can a graduate student get funding to found a startup?
Yes, through Mitacs Accelerate Entrepreneur: enrolled graduate students and postdocs who own an incorporated startup housed at a Mitacs-approved incubator can get internship units of up to $15,000 each. Incorporate first. Our IRAP vs Mitacs comparison shows when each one fits.
